Are you looking at relocating or moving areas in Sheffield? Our guide will show you the best places to live in Sheffield and why!
Kelham Island
Kelham Island was voted one of the best places to live, not just in Sheffield but across the UK by The Sunday Times in March 2023. The area draws attention for its host of independent pubs and restaurants such as Domo, Riverside and Fat Cat and even offers its own food tours. As you walk around the area and along the river, you can feel the authenticity still remains from its manufacturing past with the Kelham Island Museum. Nestled in the west of Sheffield City Centre, Kelham Island has excellent tram and bus transport links to navigate around the city and is close to all necessary amenities. Often referred to as the ‘trendy’ neighbourhood of Sheffield, Kelham has seen a rise in popularity over recent years and is set to continue with students, young professionals and families alike.
Ecclesall
Ecclesall is a great place to live for everyone, including both students and families. In this affluent area, you can find beautiful period properties, a range of independent shops and restaurants. Ecclesall Road is a three mile stretch of road blending chain and independents to create a vibrant, go-to place for socialising and shopping and is often what this area is best known for. Ecclesall is also highly convenient to go to the city centre and surrounding areas with excellent transport links but also it has beautiful green spaces close by such as Endcliffe Park.
Crookes
Crookes is a favoured suburb by both students and graduates as it is a vibrant but smaller area close to the University of Sheffield and boasts independent shops and restaurants. It is also not an area exclusive for students and you will also find many families living there. It is in close proximity to many green spaces and parks including Crookes Valley but equally the city centre is only a short way away.
It is a welcoming area to live for a low cost, with house prices still falling below the national average. Rightmove states that the average house price in Crookes over the past year is £276,081 as the area hosts rows of more affordable terraced properties.
Hillsborough
Hillsborough is no longer an overlooked area and has seen a huge rise in popularity over recent years. The area has seen funding increases, with the opening of more independent bars, restaurants and shops which has attracted more people to reside there. Hillsborough attracts both families and young professionals but is not a renowned student area despite its excellent tram links to the city centre. As a result of this, it is very accessible to other areas such as Kelham Island to explore more of Sheffield’s social scene. A popular place also close by is Walkely and these two areas are great for first time buyers. See Zooplas estimation of house prices in Hillsborough.
Dore
Dore has retained its popularity and reputation for being one of the best areas in Sheffield to live. With its own train station, reputable schools, it continues to be a popular choice for families. It is close to the countryside for local walks and beautiful scenery , has everything you need in terms of amenities and shops and is close enough to the city centre that commuting isn’t draining.
That being said, this affluent area does come at more of a price with the average house price over the past year being £565,914. Its neighbouring area, Totley, is also a desired place to live.
St Pauls
St Pauls is the best area to live in Sheffield if you’re looking for new work opportunities in the city centre. It is tailored more towards young professionals that are looking to live in a city and work locally. Its modern refurbishment and latest investments have brought brand new living spaces to Sheffield and premium central living. Being within the heart of the city, you have access to everything you will need including chain and independent restaurants, social activities, bars, clubs and shopping. With the train station close by and fantastic tram routes, you also have great links to popular places like Meadowhall. Living here, you will find it great socially with everything in walkable distance. The area is consistently being invested into, so it is only going to get better!
Norton Lees
Norton is slightly further out from the city centre but is a great suburb to live in, with a nice community feel. It has excellent transport links with many bus routes frequently going to the centre and surrounding areas. Its green spaces are also one to be desired, with places such as Graves Park and the Bishop’s House gardens right on the doorstep bringing amazing views. Norton Lees is also surrounded by other popular suburbs such as Woodseats and Meersbrook to make up the S8 postcode. The average house price in the area is £247,631 with the most popular being terraced house. However, there are some desirable semi detached and detached houses too.
