Kelham Island has transformed from former factories and outhouses into a range of drinking and eating destinations, making it one of the most popular and hip areas in Sheffield. If you’re looking to explore a little more, you’re in luck because the bars and pubs in Kelham Island seem to be never-ending, so there will always be somewhere new to try. So, join us for a bar crawl (and there are way more than the ones below)!
The Millowners Arms
Located on the site of the Kelham Island Museum, the Millowners Arms is a pub full of charm and heritage. It has a huge outdoor seating area, which makes it the perfect spot to enjoy a craft ale in the light summer evenings.
Fat Cat
Established in 1981, The Fat Cat’s mantra was to provide an alternative to the pubs which were owned by the big breweries. Fast forward and the traditional pub continues to do this by serving beer from independent breweries, unusual bottled beers, and have introduced a range of guest beers. Enjoy inside or out and if you sit outside, you may spot an extra bar serving fancy spirits.
The Kelham Island Tavern
The Kelham Island Tavern has become the Campaign for Real Ale National Pub of the Year for two years running. Specialising in real ales, it is a firm favourite with the locals and the pooches, as it is a dog-friendly pub.
Salt
Replacing Stew and Oyster in 2021, Salt offers a fun concept of ‘Craft and Bao’, serving delicious craft beers and appetising bao buns. Teaming up with Bao Mesters, both meat and veggie options are available to tickle your taste buds! Salt is the perfect location for a sunny day-drinking session as they have a spacious beer garden, but equally inside offers cosy vibes for a winter’s evening.
Saw Grinders Union
Based in one of Sheffield’s oldest Grade II listed building the ‘Globe Works’, Saw Grinders Union offers a beautiful space to enjoy delicious food and drinks. Choose from brunch, pancakes, or burgers, there’s plenty to tuck into! Plus, if you like a mid-week deal, they offer a beer and a burger from £10 and 2 for £12 on house cocktails from Thursday through to Sunday.
Kelham Kitchen & Wine Bar
Kelham Kitchen & Wine Bar boasts contemporary interiors and a spacious outside terrace where you can enjoy delicious drinks on a sunny day, or equally on a cooler evening as they have outdoor heaters (it’s a win-win)! They offer sharing platters, pizza, big plates, quality wines, beers, and spirits, as well as locally roasted coffee, brunch and Sunday lunch – the choice is yours!
Factory Floor Bar
The team behind Peddler Market have introduced Factory Floor Bar, who are specialists in drip-infused spirits and tank-fresh beer. It offers the perfect blend of traditional and contemporary – it is definitely a cool place to check out.
Heist
Enjoy a game of Shuffleboard and a beer at Heist! A venue to bring the family or enjoy a few drinks with some friends on the weekend, Heist is a huge taproom that offers draught, canned, and guest beers, as well as ciders and spirits. Slap & Pickle is situated inside and serves insanely good burgers and dirty fries, with gluten-free and vegan options available.
Gardener’s Rest
Established by the Gardener’s Rest Community Society, the Gardener’s Rest was saved from facing closure and is now thriving in the heart of Kelham Island! Serving traditional beers, and spirits, you can enjoy a tipple and some live music throughout the week, or chill out outside in the beer garden.
Wellington
If you get the tram down to Kelham Island, the Wellington can be your first or last pit-stop as it is right next to the Shalesmoor tram stop. From the outside you may think it’s closed, however, pop your head in and you’ll realise it’s a great place to grab a beer before you start or end your pub crawl!
